They have a nice fullness and balance to their tone that goes well with just about any situation. Steinways are also well distributed and well known. But Yamaha is widely distributed and very well known so you'll definitely have more luck finding a used one that is in good quality and in your budget. The feel varies depending on the size, with the larger ones being a bit more stiff (as is usually the case). It's a little much when you're trying to get more intimate. That's great for cutting through during a live performance.
I find Yamaha has a tendency to go bright with their tone. But you could probably get a very nice price if you can find a well maintained one that is used because they're not prohibitively expensive when new. I think a lot of people don't re-sell them.
I don't know what they go for on the used market. I find that feel balanced, and I'm addicted to the sound. I think they have a nice roundness and glow to their tone, reminiscent of a Schimmel (but not nearly as expensive), and the touch is not as stiff as a well maintained Steinway and not as pliable as a typical practice room upright. They used to be very cheap (in the US), not so much now, but still not expensive for a piano. There are different tones and feels that each have. It's difficult to say because there are so many variables. For the record our tracking room is about 15 x 8m and is treated (its an old film scoring theatre, so not purpose built as a recording studio, but the room sounds good and doesn't have anything too nasty going on). It's tricky for us, we're kind of an anomaly in that we're a mid range/priced studio, but we tend to attract a wide variety indie artists of all genres, including the classical world. Great to hear they may be some scope in voicing it to suit our needs. But I'm not attached to yamaha's - and I'd rather have a pianist come in and be pleasantly surprised by a no-name brand, rather than attract clients with a trusted brand, only to have them disappointed. Apparently it was the top of the line C3 of that era, made in japan etc etc. We've just come across a C3 from the late nineties that has been overhauled and comes with a 12 year warranty, which we'll be looking into. Some local advice from someone I trust suggested not getting anything too old, for fear of tuning instability and maintenance costs.
We've also got the problem of a much smaller market, and cities that are damn far apart! (AU15K is about $US12 btw). It looks like a good (and not too old) C7 is out of our budget I'm afraid. When checking out private sales we'll most certainly get the instrument looked at by a tech! I'm going to assume it's safe to trust a piano retailer, especially if they are offering a decent warranty.
